Evaluation of a Continuous Annealed Bake Hardenable Steel for Improved Dent Resistance

The potential of bake hardenable steel as a substitute for SAE 1008 steel to reduce gage and improve dent resistance is investigated in this report. Outer body panels in particular are susceptible to palm printing and other forms of denting. Conventional SAE 1008 steel and a developmental continuous annealed bake hardenable steel from Inland Steel Company are compared for dent performance properties. Bake hardenable (BH) steel is a medium strength (200-350 MPa) steel that receives an increase in yield strength during the heating of the paint bake cycle. An increase in yield strength would result in an increase in dent resistance. The increase in dent resistance is more quantitatively evaluated by comparing the BH steel with the current production material (SAE 1008) of a rear compartment lid outer.

Effect of Seat Back Restriction on Head, Neck and Torso Responses of Front Seat Occupants When Subjected to a Moderate Speed Rear-Impact

During high-speed rear impacts with delta-V > 25 km/h, the front seats may rotate rearward due to occupant and seat momentum change leading to possibly large seat deflection. One possible way of limiting this may be by introducing a structure that would restrict large rotations or deformations, however, such a structure would change the front seat occupant kinematics and kinetics. The goal of this study was to understand the influence of seat back restriction on head, neck and torso responses of front seat occupants when subjected to a moderate speed rear-impact. This was done by simulating a rear impact scenario with a delta-V of 37.4 km/h using LS-Dyna, with the GHBMC M50 occupant model and a manufacturer provided seat model. The study included two parts, the first part was to identify worst case scenarios using the simplified GHBMC M50-OS, and the second part was to further investigate the identified scenarios using the detailed GHBMC M50-O.

Electro-Motive Division of GM jointly with HRL Laboratories have developed a software tool, called TechPro, which assists in troubleshooting of diesel locomotives. The tool has been tested extensively in the field for the last two years. It has improved significantly the quality of diagnosis of locomotives. The tool is based on Graphical Probabilistic Models and Case Data Bases. We will discuss the design of the tool, its performance and will show its relevance to diagnosis of automobiles.

Diagnosis of Off-Brake Performance Issues with Low Range Pressure Distribution Sensors

Brake caliper and corner behavior in the off-brake condition can lead, at times, to brake system performance issues such as residual drag (and related issues such as pulsation, judder, and loss of fuel economy), and caliper pryback during aggressive driving maneuvers. The dynamics in the brake corner can be strikingly complex, with numerous friction interfaces, rubber component and grease dynamics, deflections of multiple components, and significant dependence on usage conditions. Displacements of moving parts are usually small, and the residual forces in the caliper interfaces involved are also small in comparison with other forces acting on the same components, making direct observation very difficult. The present work attempts to illuminate off-brake behavior in two different conditions - residual drag and pryback - through the use of low-range pressure distribution sensors placed in between the caliper (pistons and fingers) and the brake pad pressure plates.

Allison Gas Turbine Division of General Motors is performing the first phase of a multiphase development project aimed at demonstrating an electric vehicle based on a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell. This work is sponsored by the Office of Transportation Technologies of the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) through the DoE's Chicago Field Office (Contract No. DE-AC02-90CH10435). This work complements major efforts under way to produce electric vehicles for reducing pollution in key urban areas. Battery powered vehicles will initially satisfy niche markets where limited range vehicles can meet commuter needs. The PEM fuel cell/battery hybrid using methanol as fuel potentially offers an extremely attractive option to increasing the range, payload, and/or performance of battery powered vehicles.

Developing Hydrogen (H2) Specification Guidelines for Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Fuel Cell Vehicles

In 1999, the Society of Automotive Engineers established the Fuel Cell Standards Committee (FCSC). The Committee is organized in subcommittees that address issues such as Interface, Hydrogen (H2) Quality, Safety, Performance, Emissions and Fuel Consumption, Recycling and Terminology. Since its inception the SAE/FCSC has published several recommended practices, which have drawn the attention of national and international organizations. These include SAE J2578 (Fuel Cell Vehicle Safety), SAE J2600 (Compressed H2 Surface Vehicle Refueling Devices), and SAE J2594 (Recyclability of Fuel Cell Systems). The need for having one common grade of hydrogen for all US commercial hydrogen-refueling stations for FCVs was the reason to establish the H2 Quality Task Force (HQTF) in late 2003. At the present time there is no representative US-national or international standard addressing the quality of hydrogen fuel that is acceptable for fuel cell vehicles.

Separate equations describe the accommodation level for driver populations with male to female ratios of 50/50, 75/25, and a range from 90/10 to 95/5. These equations can be used as a design tool to locate the curves in vehicle space to describe the region behind which the given populations shin-knees, and stomachs would be located. Equations and curves are provided for both the left leg, which operates the clutch, and the right leg, which operates the accelerator.

Creating the Next Generation Ingress/Egress Robot

In order to more accurately simulate the load distributions and histories experienced by automotive seats in field use, more biofidelic motion and loading devices are needed. Lear and KUKA have developed a system capable of controlling the coordinated motions of a pelvis, thighs and torso dummy in order to mimic human motions. The system takes kinematic data collected from human trials and converts them directly to a robot program. Additionally, simultaneous measures of human loading using pressure distribution mats can be obtained, and these measures are used as the basis for teaching the robot to correct the kinematic data using a neural net learning algorithm. The robot has direct and indirect load feedback integration that allows the load to be precisely maintained throughout the duration of a cycle test.

Computer Vision-Based V2X Collaborative Perception

This paper presents the computer vision-based V2X collaborative perception. Our system uses a forward-looking camera in the host vehicle. The camera detects road users such as pedestrians, vehicles, and motorcycles. Such information includes object type, relative location, direction, and speed. This information is used to compose proxy Basic Safety Messages on behalf of the detected objects. Early adopters of the V2X technology can experience the benefits of enhanced V2X market penetration. The outcome of adopting this concept will result in an inflated V2X market penetration rate leading to earlier safety, mobility, and situational awareness improvements. The ultimate goal is for all road participants to be fully aware of each other. The novelty of our work is the integration of computer vision-based detection and LTE-V V2X communications, in addition to implementing the concept for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Comparison of OEM Automatic Transmission Fluids in Industry Standard Tests

As a result of raised awareness regarding the proliferation of individual OEM recommended ATFs, and discussion in various forums regarding the possibility of ‘universal’ service fill fluids, it was decided to study how divergent individual OEM requirements actually are by comparing the fluids performance in industry standard tests. A bench-mark study was carried out to compare the performance of various OEM automatic transmission fluids in selected industry standard tests. All of the fluids evaluated in the study are used by certain OEMs for both factory and service fill. The areas evaluated included friction durability, oxidation resistance, viscosity stability, aeration and foam control. The results of this study are discussed in this paper. Based on the results, one can conclude that each ATF is uniquely formulated to specific OEM requirements.

Comparison Tests Between Major European and North American Automotive Wind Tunnels

The results of comparative aerodynamic force measurements on a full-scale notchback-type vehicle, performed between 6 European companies operating full-scale automotive wind tunnels, were published in the SAE Paper 800140. Correlation tests with the same vehicle have been extended to 2 further European and 3 North American wind tunnels. First the geometry, the design and the flow data of the different wind tunnels is compared. The facilities compared include wind tunnels with open-test-sections, closed-test-sections and one tunnel with slotted side walls. The comparison of results, especially for drag coefficients, show that the correlation between the differently designed wind tunnels is reasonable. Problems of blockage correction are briefly discussed. The comparison tests furthermore revealed that careful design of the wheel pads and blockage corrections for lift seem to be very influential in achieving reasonable lift correlations. Six-component measurements show similar problems.

Combining DFSS and Multi-body Dynamics for Vehicle Ride Tuning

A methodology involving Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) and Multi-body dynamic simulation is employed to tune a body-on-frame vehicle, for improved ride (shake) performance. The design space is limited to four sets of symmetric body mounts for a vehicle. The stiffness and damping characteristics of the mounts are the control factors in the virtual experiment. Variation of these design parameters from the nominal settings, as well as axle size, tire and wheel combinations, tire pressure, shock damping, and vehicle speed constitute the noise factors. This approach proves to be an excellent predictor of the vehicle behavior, by which much insight as to influence of each parameter on vehicle performance is gained. Ultimately, specific recommendations for the control factor settings are provided. Subsequent hardware builds show excellent agreement with the analytical model and suggested tuning.

Cervical Spine Injury Mechanisms

A test series using eight unembalmed cadavers was conducted to investigate factors affecting the creation of cervical spine damage from impact to the crown of the head. The crown impact was accomplished by a free-fall drop of the test subject onto a load plate. The load plate striking surface was covered with padding to vary the contact force time characteristics. The orientations of the head, cervical spine, and torso were adjusted relative to a laboratory coordinate system to investigate the effects of head and spinal configuration on the damage patterns. Load and acceleration data are presented as a function of time and as a function of frequency in the form of mechanical impedance.

Brain Injury Risk Assessment of Frontal Crash Test Results

An objective, biomechanically based assessment is made of the risks of life-threatening brain injury of frontal crash test results. Published 15 ms HIC values for driver and right front passenger dummies of frontal barrier crash tests conducted by Transport Canada and NHTSA are analyzed using the brain injury risk curve of Prasad and Mertz. Ninety-four percent of the occupants involved in the 30 mph, frontal barrier compliance tests had risks of life-threatening brain injury less than 5 percent. Only 3 percent had risks greater than 16 percent which corresponds to 15 ms HIC > 1000. For belt restrained occupants without head contact with the interior, the risks of life-threatening brain injury were less than 2 percent. In contrast, for the more severe NCAP test condition, 27 percent of the drivers and 21 percent of the passengers had life-threatening brain injury risks greater than 16 percent.

Biomechanical Analysis of Indy Race Car Crashes

This paper describes the results of an ongoing project in the GM Motorsports Safety Technology Research Program to investigate Indianapolis-type (Indy car) race car crashes using an on-board impact recorder as the primary data collection tool. The paper discusses the development of specifications for the impact-recording device, the selection of the specific recorder and its implementation on a routine basis in Indy car racing. The results from incidents that produced significant data (crashes with peak decelerations above 20 G) during the racing seasons from 1993 through the first half of 1998 are summarized. The focus on Indy car crashes has proven to provide an almost laboratory-like setting due to the similarity of the cars and to the relative simplicity of the crashes (predominantly planar crashes involving single car impacts against well-defined impact surfaces).

Biofidelity and Injury Assessment in Eurosid I and Biosid

Side impact pendulum tests were conducted on Eurosid I and Biosid to assess the biofidelity of the thorax, abdomen and pelvis, and determine injury tolerance levels. Each body region was impacted at 4.5, 6.7, and 9.4 m/s using test conditions which duplicate cadaver impacts with a 15 cm flat-circular 23.4 kg rigid mass. The cadaver database establishes human response and injury risk assessment in side impact. Both dummies showed better biofidelity when compared to the lowest-speed cadaver response corridor. At higher speeds, peak force was substantially higher. The average peak contact force was 1.56 times greater in Biosid and 2.19 times greater in Eurosid 1 than the average cadaver response. The Eurosid I abdomen had the most dissimilar response and lacks biofidelity. Overall, Biosid has better biofidelity than Eurosid I with an average 21% lower peak load and a closer match to the duration of cadaver impact responses for the three body regions.

Benefits of Active Head Restraints for Compliance to Rear Impact Test Requirements

The International Insurance Whiplash Protection Group (IIWPG) rating system has driven improvements in head restraint (head restraint) geometry and the addition of a dynamic test has helped address head restraint construction parameters. FMVSS 202a Static imposes more stringent requirements on backset and stiffness and the Dynamic option relaxes the potentially uncomfortable backset requirement if angular head movement can be limited to a specified level. These two requirements utilize different crash dummies and measurement parameters. The BioRID2 ATD (IIWPG) rewards a seat with good torso penetration to reduce neck loading. Seats with high comfort content tend to rate low. The Hybrid III-50 ATD (FMVSS) rewards limited lower torso penetration to reduce head rotation relative to the torso. Current production seats without active head restraints (AHR) are difficult to optimize to meet both the requirements of FMVSS 202a Dynamic and earn an IIWPG rating of Good.

Assessment of Novel V2X Applications Using a Simulation Platform

Vehicle to Everything (V2X) technology has been studied extensively in the past years. Limited pilot and production deployments, and research work have demonstrated V2X benefits. These include improvement to safety, mobility conditions and environmental benefits. Several safety and mobility applications have been investigated in literature. Nonetheless, V2X holds a potential for broader innovation in connected and automated vehicle applications. Feasibility assessment and algorithm validation of such applications may prove to be challenging. This results from costs associated with test track rental and equipping vehicles with V2X technology. Besides, limited V2X penetration rate leads to unavailability of naturalistic testing environment. In this paper, we investigate the use of the autonomous vehicle simulation, named Carla, for V2X application validation. Carla is an open source project that we altered to enable V2X applications assessment.
